The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Sierpe & the Térraba-Sierpe Mangroves

Everything you need to know about getting to Sierpe, parking your rental car, connecting with boats to Drake Bay, packing essentials, and planning your mangrove boat safari.

How to Get to Sierpe (Driving & Bus Directions)

Sierpe is located in the southern Pacific zone of Costa Rica (Osa Canton, Puntarenas Province). The entire route from San José, Manuel Antonio, Dominical, and Uvita is on fully paved, smooth asphalt highways—no 4x4 vehicle is required to reach Sierpe.

• By Car from San José: Drive along Route 27 to Route 34 (Costanera Sur) past Jacó, Quepos, and Uvita until Palmar Norte (approx. 4.5 to 5 hours). Turn onto Route 223 toward Sierpe (15 km paved road, about 15 minutes).

• By Car from Uvita / Dominical: Take Route 34 south to Palmar Norte, then turn right on Route 223 directly into Sierpe town square (approx. 1 hour total drive).

• Secure Parking in Sierpe: If you are arriving with a rental car or personal vehicle, secure fenced parking lots with 24/7 security attendants right by the main river dock are included for the duration of your tour. If you are leaving your car to visit Drake Bay or for extended stays, parking is available for a flat rate of $8 USD per day (parking can also be reserved in advance directly on SierpeXplorer).

• By Public Bus: Tracopa buses run daily from San José (Calle 5, Ave 20) to Palmar Norte. From Palmar Norte, frequent local buses and collective taxis run the 15-minute hop directly to Sierpe park.

Sierpe to Drake Bay Boat Connection

Sierpe is famously known as the official river gateway to Bahía Drake and Corcovado National Park. Most travelers headed to Drake Bay take the public water taxi departing from the Sierpe dock.

• Daily boat departures to Drake Bay leave Sierpe at 11:30 AM and 4:00 PM.

• Boat Fare & Booking: The boat ticket to Drake Bay is $25 USD per person. You can easily reserve your boat tickets in advance directly on SierpeXplorer.

• Catching the 4:00 PM boat: You can also take the afternoon 4:00 PM boat to Drake Bay, which allows you to do a mangrove tour at any departure time at or before 1:00 PM (inclusive).

• The scenic boat trip takes 45–60 minutes down the Sierpe River through the mangrove forest out to the Pacific Ocean, offering an impromptu wildlife safari along the way.

Best Time to Visit Sierpe Mangrove

Sierpe and the Térraba-Sierpe wetland are a tropical rainforest ecosystem that can be enjoyed 365 days a year. Each season offers unique advantages:

• Dry Season (December to April): Abundant sunshine, calmest water conditions, and peak numbers of North American migratory bird species. Excellent for landscape photography and beach days on Violines Island.

• Green / Tropical Season (May to November): Lush, vivid green foliage, higher water levels allowing boats to penetrate narrow inner mangrove creeks, and cooler temperatures. Mornings are typically clear and sunny, with brief afternoon tropical rains that bring out amphibians and active wildlife.

Packing List & Recommendations

• Camera / Smartphone: You will encounter close-up wildlife. A lens with at least 200–300mm reach is ideal.

• Binoculars: Essential for observing birds in high branches and camouflaged sloths.

• Light clothing: Quick-dry shirts, shorts or light pants, and comfortable sandals or sneakers.

• Sun & Bug Protection: Biodegradable sunscreen, wide-brim hat, polarized sunglasses, and bug spray.

• Dry bag: Recommended to keep sensitive electronic devices safe during boat rides.
